Alien Covenant

A new movie in the Alien series is coming out and it looks to be a good one with lots of bizarre alien surprises and edge of your seat thrills. Can't wait for Alien Covenant -- coming up for release in May, I think.

Somewhere, I got the idea that the original sequel and subsequent back story for the Alien movie franchise had a more biblical basis. Allow me to explain.

If you recall, in the last installment, Prometheus, we discovered an ancient race of super-beings, referred to hereafter as The Engineers, seeded the Earth with DNA. Voila! Via genetic engineering controlled by aliens, all life on Earth is formed. Why would they do such a thing? The audience doesn't know, but it is certainly a case of "because they could." I mean, they're super-beings, so why not?

A new crew -- fresh meat.
As the story progresses, our heroes find themselves led to LV-223, a distant moon in orbit around a planet light-years fro Earth. Holy cow! It's a biological weapons stockpile! The mystery unfolds and the scientists conclude an outbreak of weaponized, nasty, black and sticky stuff killed all the super beings (who, by the way, look kinda like Nephilim but no wings) save for one who happened to sleep through it all. I know, it's hokey, but hang in there. On top of it all, we are told something happened two thousand years ago that caused the super beings to target Earth -- Humanity -- but before they could turn xenomorphs loose on the planet, they had their own little accident. Oops.

So why were The Engineers set to kill off humanity? Could it be that two thousand years ago one of them broke faith and went to Earth to offer salvation and knowledge? Indeed, that was the role of the original Prometheus. Perhaps it was a breakaway Engineer who arranged for the "accident" at the LV-223 weapons facility.

Is the Prometheus super being character actually Jesus? There's your two thousand year tie-in. I doubt whether Ridley Scot or James Cameron would complete that story, and yet stranger tales have been told.

We already know the next Alien film is to be Alien: Covenant with a release date of oh my look at that! It's today! [Edit: I am utterly wrong on this -- it's May 19th for the release date] According to IDMB, Covenant concerns the crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. They discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

I don't have a clue how Covenant will fit with Prometheus except what I've seen from the trailers and now I must wait for some fool to record it in a movie theater and then put the results on a torrent so that I may accomplish my sci-fi marketing research. Uh-huh.
