The Sunday Edition (.009)

Welcome to the tardy Sunday Edition. Enjoy all the news that's fit to read and most that's not.The Drifter neglected to mention some of the larger headlines this week because the Drifter's readers are so astute, so likely to be aware of what is happening in the world, that it would be redundant to detail the big items that have already been revealed and inspected. Like Brexit, for instance. Or the ongoing dishonesty of our professional politicians (oh, all right, I'll say something about the graft and corruption somewhere below -- Charles Rangel is the deserving target this week.

• There are now more non-military government employees who carry guns than there are U.S. Marines, according to a new report.

Open the Books, a taxpayer watchdog group, released a study Wednesday that finds domestic government agencies continue to grow their stockpiles of military-style weapons, as Democrats sat on the House floor calling for more restrictions on what guns American citizens can buy. The “Militarization of America” report found civilian agencies spent $1.48 billion on guns, ammunition, and military-style equipment between 2006 and 2014. Examples include IRS agents with AR-15s, and EPA bureaucrats wearing camouflage.

• Federal Court Rules Govt Can Hack Your Computer Without a Warrant, No Probable Cause. Federal government continues to find new inroads into violating 4th Amendment protections that are supposed to be guaranteed to all citizens. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that “evidence of an alleged crime can be used against a defendant even if police did something inappropriate or even illegal to obtain it.” In February, a state supreme court ruled 4-3 that “evidence seized in a person’s private home during a warrantless search can be used against the person under an expanded view of the “community caretaker” clause.”

• University Of North Carolina: CHRISTMAS VACATION Is A ‘Microagression’ Now. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill issued a guide this week which instructs students that Christmas vacations and telling a woman “I love your shoes!” are “microagressions.” The taxpayer-funded guide — entitled “Career corner: Understanding microaggressions” — also identifies golf outings and the words “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” as microagressions.

• Charlie Rangel Found Guilty on 11 of 13 Ethics Violations. A House ethics committee subpanel today found Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel guilty of 11 of the 13 charges of ethics violations against him.The panel, composed of four Democrats and four Republicans, emerged after private deliberation to announce their findings. “This has been a difficult assignment,” committee chair Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) said. “We have tried to act with fairness, led only by the facts and the law, and I believe we have accomplished that mission.”

• Crazy Pope Francis was asked Sunday en route home from Armenia if he agreed with one of his top advisers, German Cardinal Reinhard Marx, who told a conference in Dublin in the days after the deadly Orlando gay club attack that the church owes an apology to gays for having marginalized them.

Francis responded with a variation of his famous “Who am I to judge?” comment and a repetition of church teaching that gays must not be discriminated against but treated with respect.

He said some politicized behaviors of the homosexual community can be condemned for being “a bit offensive for others.” But he said: “Someone who has this condition, who has good will and is searching for God, who are we to judge?”

“We must accompany them,” Francis said.

“I think the church must not only apologize… to a gay person it offended, but we must apologize to the poor, to women who have been exploited, to children forced into labor, apologize for having blessed so many weapons” and for having failed to accompany families who faced divorces or experienced other problems."

How about apologizing to Vietnam veterans? How about apologizing to the families of over a million noncombatant southerners who died as a result of northern aggression? How about apologizing to God for the millions of abortions committed each year? Apologize? You gotta be kidding, Francis. Well, just goes to show, you can be the leader of a big worldwide church and still be an idiot.

• The gun grabbers tell you they want more gun control in order to keep you safe. But that is the Big Lie.

If they really wanted to limit guns used most to murder people they’d target handguns, which are used in almost half of all homicides. Of 8,124 murders using a firearm in 2014, handguns were used 5,562 times. Rifles were used to murder someone only 248 times. And the dreaded “assault weapon” the politicians make such a kerfuffle over is a subset of rifles, so the number of people killed by those is much lower. That is evidence the government assault on so-called “assault rifles” is just a show designed to confuse, deflect and cause conflict and a means to begin the incremental steps to a complete gun ban.

An assault pistol.
According to the FBI, shotguns were used more than rifles (262 times), and Joe Biden says you ought to buy one to shoot from your front porch to scare intruders away. Knives (1,567 times) were the most-used weapon of choice after firearms, followed by “weapon not stated (830 times), what the FBI calls “personal weapons” (hands, fists, feet, etc., 660 times) and blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc., 435 times).

Of course, keeping us safe is not the goal of the politicians or the gun grabbers or anyone else who would deign to make your choices for you. If they wanted to keep us safe, they would institute “doctor control.” Doctors kill almost a million soon-to-be-born babies a year and more than 1 million more Americans die each year of iatrogenic deaths (doctor or hospital error) and adverse reactions from prescription drugs. The total number of annual homicides using all means (less than 12,000) pales in comparison to doctor-caused deaths.

It’s not politically correct to say it, but most homicides are gang bangers killing other gang bangers, gang bangers killing people standing near their gang banger targets or gang bangers killing people they’ve targeted for crime. Your chance of dying from a gunshot if you are not a gang banger or not committing suicide is 0.0005417721518987342 percent. The media won’t tell you that.
