Part of my rehab following heart surgery is a daily regimen of walking and I'm happy to report I'm up to a mile. The truth is, I've always been a walker and/or a runner, so I'm sure many local folks recognize me as that guy who walks all over town. One of the things that constantly amazes me while I am out on my treks is that I don't see more people walking or riding bikes. I mean, I can usually log several miles walking from one end of town to the other and never see another walker. Even though I stick to the back streets, quite a few cars pass me, but rarely do I see other walkers. With the price of gas being what it is, plus considering the small size of the Texas town where I live, you'd think people would seek out alternative forms of transportation. They don't, though; they stick to their cars. It makes me wonder what people are going to do when gas prices finally get too high to take the beast out of the garage every time momma needs some milk. Americans have become so spoiled.

I am also happy to report that my rehab is progressing nicely. There are challenges, to be sure, but I've been able to handle everything thrown at me so far. Owing to the machinations of modern medicine, I was home less than a week after surgery. The help I had lined up didn't work out and I found myself on my own, but such has been the nature of my life -- if things were easy, they wouldn't call it life. Instead, it would be paradise, or nirvana, or heaven. Well, as they say, we shoot our own scene, so I really don't have anyone to blame but myself. Thank goodness, good old self is a tough old bastard and truly the only one I can depend on. What's left of my family didn't have the means or the wherewithal or the caring to offer help although brother David has called weekly and I do appreciate that. The friends and acquaintances I've made over the years were silent and ex-employers who always claimed I was part of the business family stayed away by the droves. It has been a profound experience realizing how petty, withdrawn, and hypocritical most people from this small Texas county really are. My life does not matter to these people.

On the other hand, Pastor David Isbell and members of the Eagle Drive Baptist Church brought me food, called to check on me, and offered spiritual help in an outpouring of selfless giving. I cannot thank these good people enough. Monte Shaw, a church deacon and county tax assessor, has been especially supportive. Additionally, thanks to my friend Scott Huckabee, long-haired country boy and 80's style guitar shredder, for checking in on me. Ted and Glenette Lewis also called and offered support, as well as Injun Joe Tawbush (thanks, Joe!). I thank God for those who have helped. Without them, this tough recovery would be nigh impossible.

Tales of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. I am currently recovering from a short hospital stay and expect to resume work on the Harry Irons sequel within days -- hours, if I had my way. A huge thank-you goes out to all who have expressed their concern! I try to respond to all letters and emails in a timely manner, but have been slowed somewhat -- don't write me off because I plan on bouncing back with renewed fury.

A Review of 11/22/63, a Novel by Stephen King

Among those who pay attention to all things Americana, there are basically two camps: those who believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone as the assassin of John F. Kennedy, thirty-fifth president of the United States, and those who believe only an orchestrated conspiracy could have pulled off what is often called the crime of the century. Whenever or wherever the subject comes up, there are sure to be mixed and even emotional reactions. The event, although now dated forty-nine years in a fading past, can still raise hackles and blood pressure. Somehow, Stephen King manages to avoid those reactions in his latest effort, 11/22/63, even though he definitely believes Oswald was on his own.

Although this reviewer fully admits to falling into the opposite camp, the story King tells is compelling and a pleasure to read. It is different from King’s other works. Not in rhetoric or style – the same easy-going flow is there along with the familiar references to American culture that King so often uses to great effect – but in that the story is not a horror story. It is a time-travel tale and it is a romance, but it is also a story that fulfills that oft-wished-for “what-if” scenario. In this case, what if we could somehow go back in time and change events in an effort to relieve resultant pain and suffering, in an effort to make the world a better place. What would happen?

As Jake Epping, aka George Amberson, protagonist of 11/22/63 discovers, the past is obdurate. It doesn’t want to be changed and doing so causes ripples which can quickly result in unplanned effects, few of which seem to be good. But Jake does find a number of treasures, not least of which is a romance with Sadie Dunning, who provides a love at first sight encounter that develops into a raison d’etre for the 21st century drop-out. Jake also finds a way of life in the past that seems truer, less harried, and more poignant. As he discovers after first stepping back to 1958, even the simple taste of a cold root beer is deeper and more satisfying than what he is accustomed to in 2011.

King does not belabor the point about who committed the crime of assassination, but he does hold the reader in suspense for the greater part of the book, a feat in itself considering the story winds out to a total of 849 pages.

There is much consideration on King’s part about the consequences of changing the past and how the ripples of change might affect the future. These are all well-thought out and when the author does bump into the inevitable paradoxes, he handles them with his wonderfully dexterous imagination. When that isn’t enough, he simply lets his character say what any one of us would say when confronted with an unsolvable mystery: I don’t know how it works, but it does. His descriptions of North Texas in the early sixties are excellent and he captures the feel of the time as if he were there himself. I know because I was.

One of the chief complaints of Under the Dome was the political bias King displayed. 11/22/63 indeed contains a bit of that as well, but not nearly as much, and so what anyway? After all, it is the author’s prerogative. In my estimation, 11/22/63, does not come across as an argument to convince the reader about what did or did not happen on 11/22/63. Rather, it explores the notion that whatever occurs in our lives is understood by the acceptance of events, that even as harsh as reality can be, it is the way it is intended to be and there is consolation in that knowledge.

11/22/63 is a wonderful book by one of America’s great modern-day authors – not to be missed.

As an afterthought, author King fully admits even his own wife, Tabitha, is more aligned with notions of conspiracy when it comes to the JFK assassination. Additionally, the ten-month investigation by the Warren Commission from 1963 through 1964 concluded that President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone and that Jack Ruby acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial. These conclusions were initially supported by the American public; however, polls conducted from 1966 to 2004 found that as many as 80 percent of Americans suspect there was a plot or cover-up.

The United States House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) was established in 1976 to investigate the assassinations of Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. and the shooting of Governor George Wallace. The Committee investigated until 1978, and in 1979 issued its final report, concluding that President John F. Kennedy was very likely assassinated as a result of a conspiracy. However, the committee noted that it believed that the conspiracy did not include the governments of the Soviet Union or Cuba. It also stated it did not believe the conspiracy was organized by any organized crime group, nor any anti-Castro group, but that it could not rule out individual members of any of those groups acting together.

When I was a kid growing up in Texas, I remember when my family got our first television, and thus began my lost years. In the evenings, the family would gather around this marvelous new invention and watch Ed Sullivan, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, and a host of other performers. The broadcasts themselves were free. All one had to do was set up an antenna and attach a wire to the rear of the television set. No cable fee, no subscription fee, just turn it on and switch the dial to 4, 5, 8, or 11 (Don't forget 11, Slam-bang Theatre is on with host Icky Twerp).

Before dad brought home the TV, we sat in the same room and listened to radio programming. It too was free and even the commercials seemed to be enjoyable, but I was just a little kid, so what did I know?

Later, when we couldn't find the ball game or the boxing match on TV, we returned to the radio and, sure enough, we almost always found what we wanted somewhere on the dial. Sadly, those days are long gone. You can still catch the news at the top and bottom of every hour, but other than politically-fueled talk shows, there's very little solid entertainment on the radio anymore.

As a teen, music took over my life and my interest in radio programming was revived. I awoke to the mersey beat and fell asleep to motown. "Turn off that %&#^* music and go to sleep!" said dad. I discovered transistor radios and earplugs and slept through first period most school days.

The lure of the television was strong though, and soon I was spending more time in front of the tube than practically any other activity. Saturdays were my favorite time. Cartoons from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, then outside for football or baseball, depending on the season, then in for dinner at 6, sitting with the folks through Lawrence Welk and other variety shows until mom and dad retired at 10. Then it was my turn again in the form of late night 50s horror and science fiction. A sleeping bag, a bowl of popcorn, and Vincent Price.

Those were indeed the good old days. Fast-forward fifty years. I have televisions in my humble abode, yet I rarely watch anything other than an occasional DVD. I have cable, but it is for internet only, so sometimes I'll stream movies online (for free). Other than that, I haven't watched "regular" television programming for nearly ten years. I admit that I've tried, but what I see is just not very entertaining. Sometimes, I even doubt the veracity of the Discovery channel, or the History channel. The comedies aren't funny and the cop shows are too gory. Plus, if you want to watch that stuff, you have to pony up to Dish or Communicomm every month. TV is not free.

Well, the radio is still free and sometimes you can still catch a ball game. Weekends on the radio, however, are taken up with all-day infomercials and I can't possibly find it in my miniscule budget to invest in gold or annuities.

I guess that's OK. Instead of watching, I read, and write, and go for the occasional walk. I don't think I'm missing much -- even when a co-worker asks if I saw the game last night. "Listened on the radio," I reply.

When I was teaching school, I admitted to one of the other teachers that I didn't watch television. "Hmm," she said, "I wouldn't let that get around."

The Doomed Dollar

What has not been said about the current economic situation? From pie-in-the-sky optimists to dire warnings from those who see an approaching apocalypse, we have prognosticators from all sides who claim one thing for certain: there will be significant changes in our way of life and these changes will be preceded by the devaluation of the American dollar.

A dollar collapse would be the single largest economic event in human history. It would be the first economic event that would influence every living person in the world. No denomination in human history has had as much influence upon the world as the dollar. It is the de facto world currency. While there have been other economic collapses in history, all pale in comparison to the dollar's predicted collapse. The reason is that the other historical currency crises were regional and there were other currencies available for people to switch to. The dollar's collapse, however, would be global and it would bring down not only the dollar but all other fiat currencies. Some economists even predict that the collapse of currencies would lead to the collapse of all paper assets.

Thanks to globalization, the dollar is the world’s reserve currency. It supports the global economy in matters pertaining to foreign trade, most importantly, in oil dollars. This money is recycled through London and New York where corporate and/or government forces take out huge shares through taxation, fees, and profit. The model is driven by the knowledge that a consistently growing economy matches an increasing population with ever more requirements for resources. As long as economies are growing, whether global or regional, it is reasoned, there will be enough (money, jobs, food, housing) to sustain people.

Barring a miracle, the cycle as described above will end with the inevitable collapse of the U.S. dollar. In order for our debt-based money to function we must increase the debt every year in excess of the debt as well as the interest accrued the year before or we will enter a deflationary spiral. When debt is created, money is created. When debt is paid off, money is destroyed. There is never enough to pay off the debt.

So, we can either default on the debt altogether or create more money (debt) to maintain the status quo a while longer. The problem is, we are approaching a compound interest moment when the debt exceeds the principal -- hyperinflation will be the result. That is the scenario where it will take a wheelbarrow of money to purchase a loaf of bread.

There are other options, if our leaders are bold enough. Beyond politics and Wall Street’s typical ways of doing business, debt forgiveness should be an option. And China and the other countries who hold America’s mortgage? Ask them to forgive our debts (similar to how we forgave theirs after the World Wars of the twentieth century) with the understanding that if they don’t, we will default in any case. What if there was a national day of debt forgiveness? Following a clearing of the books for every loan institution in the country, imagine the vigor of a re-start. Maybe even fix the rules while we’re stalled.

A friend once asked where was the best place to be in case of a nuclear attack? The answer is, it’s where you can say, “What was that?” The same holds true for surviving an economic collapse as well as the inevitable re-arranging of banking and government. I favor the notion that people will persevere as they always have -- through community connections and by the use of their wits.

So what to do in the meantime? Opt for a soft landing. Prepare as best you can and trust in whatever greater power you believe to protect you. Remember, people have been around a lot longer than either money or governments.

Reality -- What a Concept

We make decisions based upon our perceptions of the world and our perceptions are irrevocably linked with our expectations. In other words, we define the world according to our beliefs and act in response to established procedures. That’s how we discriminate between right and wrong. Therefore, every day is filled with decision-making moments that delve into what is best for ourselves balanced with what is best for those around us.

Now, at this point in my discussion, it would be easy to simply shrug and say, keep the faith, trust in God, and these matters will sort themselves out. That is wise and true, but bear with me a moment as I force a little deeper exploration.

Even for the most faithful, there are problems with sorting out the mere appearance of truth with truth itself. To help make the best decisions, we utilize and depend on trusted information resources. This is where problems often arise -- how to not be fooled by appearances.

Appearance versus reality. It’s an old question and one of the most fundamental in philosophy. What is genuinely real and what is merely appearance? Assuming there is a difference between the two, how do we distinguish between them in any reliable way when there are so many slick, mass marketing techniques and smooth-talking salesmen who establish and sell to our desires and fears rather than our needs?

Many years ago when I was working as a research analyst and had too much money, I thought I needed to upgrade my transportation. In large part, my desire was brought about by watching too many seductive advertisements for vehicles. Additionally, I drove a pick-up and my colleagues drove Beamers and Mercedes. Peer pressure and desire is a dangerous combination. I ended up making a quick decision and purchased a Nissan 300ZX which, in those times, was one of the slickest, sexiest vehicles on the market. To cut to the chase, I came to my senses overnight and, much to the dealership’s consternation, reneged on the deal the next day. The reality of the situation is that I didn’t need new wheels for transportation. Instead, I had allowed myself to be talked into the deal.

By extension of that reasoning, most, if not all of us, are influenced by advertising and news reports. Come on. Does a salesman really care whether or not you need a particular product as long as you buy the product from him? So, the salesman’s job is to create an appearance of reality that appeals to our more prurient senses.

This stuff extends way past deciding what toothpaste to use or what car to purchase. It also goes for political campaigns and national philosophies (global warming, the green movement, anti-gun, pro-gun -- well, you get the point) -- anywhere mass consensus can be influenced.

In that context and as if there wasn't enough doubt already, there's a new software application that allows a user to remove images from digital videos. That means if you wanted to remove someone or something from a movie you've made, well, you could do it on your computer by utilizing the new software. The kicker is that the new software is able to do its magic in real time via a video feed.

The computer technique has been dubbed, "diminished reality," because that's what it is -- a subtraction of something from our perception. In movie lingo, it would be called special effects, but movies are not shown in real time.

Reports say the application is intended for city planning, interactive film and television, and engineering design. Also, it will be available for Windows.

It doesn't take a newspaper reporter to figure out the opportunity for misuse of this computer package is compelling. The release of diminished reality software could call into question the validity of any video feed.

BAD BLOOD is one of author Pat Whitaker's first efforts in the fiction realm. It is an outstanding mystery story in that it artfully weaves diverse characters and sub-plots into a cohesive whole that delivers an altogether entertaining reading experience. Additionally, BAD BLOOD is about vampires -- and who doesn't love a good vampire story? Especially when it offers an alternative view of what being a vampire is all about.

The story kicks off with a series of murders in Manchester, England, where victims are found drained of blood with those two tell-tale marks upon the side of their necks. The chief investigator is a bloke named Detective Inspector Paul Stringer who, by the way, shows up in some of Whitaker's other stories, making him (at least for me) sort of a Carl Kolchak character. For the uninformed, that's Kolchak from the old Night Stalker television series, circa 1974. While Stringer is not as hard-boiled as Kolchak, he is definitely more personable and professional. Stringer's female counterpart in the story is played by Doctor Katherine Platte, a psychologist called into the investigation to help profile the killer, or, as we soon learn, killers. But don't be misled here, Platte and Stringer are not destined for romance. Stringer is far too professional, at least in this particular tale, and the good Dr. Platte becomes involved with another, far more mysterious character by the name of Hugh Montecrief. Hugh has connections to the murders and secrets that, well, are best kept secret.

Without giving too much away, I can say BAD BLOOD follows the investigation of a suspected serial killer that branches into a search for motives among diverse suspects while speculating on the possibility that real-life vampires just may be out here among us.

Whitaker draws his characters in delightful fashion with honesty and good humor. Stringer is the kind of cop you hope will be around to help should trouble arise. Dr. Platte is a well-educated professional with a woman's sensibilities. The bad guys are troubled souls who have their reasons for who and what they do, but it doesn't make them any less evil.

BAD BLOOD, like Whitaker's other books, is a short read, intended for one or two long sittings. The story is engaging enough to accomplish exactly that. Five Stars and a bloody good time.

The Power of Thought

I read a lot of science fiction. Since I was a kid, I've read science fiction so I have a pretty fair background. Also, I've studied literature. English and world literature, so I'm acquainted with most genres and plots and so on. Also wasted time studying philosophy, got a minor in Philosophy, as a matter of fact. Now, there are still plenty of people who are better read than I and more studious, as well as far smarter I'm sure, but I imagine I notice the same things they notice in the bulk of science fiction writing.

Over the years, there have been some great writers and some really intelligent people penning all those fantastic stories. After reading hundreds of books and stories, I can't help but notice common threads and themes, like shared visions these great writers seem to have. Writing about the future and the technologies mankind develops can be fun. It's certainly fun reading these well-crafted stories. Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury, Clarke, and so many more whose names escape me, are all visionaries and most write about the same thing which is, what's going to happen to the human race? It’s a fair question to ask, especially in troubling times. As fantastic as these stories are, most science fiction writers still develop a traditional story form with a protagonist working against a particular menace that threatens our world, or by extension, our universe. Of course, the odds are against the hero, but the story plays out in an entertaining way and the hero eventually overcomes all the problems in his/her quest and saves all of humanity. This scenario is satisfying for readers because it assures us of a continuation of the race, in a sense a shot at immortality, and most of us naturally pull for the good guy.

Now, these great writers recognize that the key to survival is the ability to adapt and change. That's what all writers have their characters do and sometimes it's what they have humanity do as a whole. One predominant change that I see over and over again entails a unique change in mental state. I don't mean having a character simply adopt a new attitude. Our hero doesn't just set his jaw and proceed with a steely-eyed stare to vanquish his foes. It's much more than that. These visionary writers often describe a distant future where mankind has developed, in order to survive, an ability to expand their awareness. In short, characters evolve to become mentalists. They read minds. They are telepaths. They influence others via the power of psionics. The evolved telepathic powers take different forms but all go beyond what current science deems possible.

Personally, I’ve never witnessed a case of clairvoyance or mind-reading beyond what could be called a lucky guess. I have run into egoists from time to time who claimed they could tell what I was thinking, especially over-bearing bosses, but I’ve never run into somebody who could consistently make correct guesses as to the outcome of specific future events, or move objects with mind control, or make people do things they didn’t want to do.

It’s generally agreed that these abilities are beyond what people can do.

My question is, why do so many of these extremely intelligent science fiction writers use telepathic ability as a vehicle for change and adaptation? Are they telling us they believe such mental evolution is possible? Or, is it just a fancy of imagination? Bear in mind that the task of a science fiction author is to project his imagination in a believable way in order to explain the fantastic -- to portray today’s magic as tomorrow’s science.

One thing futurists have in common is the idea that the evolution of homo sapiens no longer centers on our physical nature, but rather on our mental abilities. The perception is that the next level of evolution for humans is of the mind, not the body. This flies in the face of what we generally agree is possible. But still we persist in believing that the next evolution of the species is for the mind to be able to do things beyond the limitations of the body.

In the last few years, we’ve made much progress in understanding the nature of reality via breakthroughs in particle physics and the general unified field theory. Essentially, advanced physics tells us that everything in existence is not separate, that everything is influenced by something else and that, additionally, these influences range from the gross to the subtle. For example, matched, identical sub-atomic particles can be separated from one another over vast distances and then changes can be made to one that will be reflected in the other. Pretty fantastic, eh? It’s not science fiction either.

There are rising popular notions that a person’s focused intentions will influence that person’s future. Meditate or pray for success and it is more likely one will achieve that success without doing anything else. Well, the popular belief has always been that having a positive attitude works wonders. Some physicists go so far as to insist that the popular notion is, in fact, based on the theory of attraction.

Is that where our science fiction writers get the idea that people will eventually harness the ability to mentally influence reality? As they say, everything starts with an idea. Will we eventually be able to wish our desires into existence? Or, are we already doing it?

UNDER THE DOME by Stephen King

It has been some time since I read anything by Stephen King but I always enjoyed his writing style and his ability to come up with compelling stories. So, when I ran across UNDER THE DOME, the storyline sounded intriguing and I was in the mood to settle in for a long read -- at 1,074 pages, UNDER THE DOME is a long read. I surfed over to Amazon, found a soft cover edition for $9.99, put in my order and waited. The book arrived in a week and I jumped into it. It was like returning to familiar territory. Stephen King is easy to read, surely one of the prime ingredients of his commercial success. His prose is straightforward, with stories told in an easy-going manner that pulls the reader in. We can identify his characters as regular people from all walks of Americana, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. As I read, I was happy with the thought that this was the same old King, a writer I can always rely on to entertain me with both dark and light elements. And he did just that.

UNDER THE DOME is about a small town in Maine, Chester's Mill, that wakes up one morning in October to find itself surrounded by an invisible barrier and subsequently is cut off from the rest of society. Faced with such a startlingly impossible occurrence, the inhabitants of Chester's Mill react in differing ways but it is only a short time before their mounting fear manifests itself in murder, suicide, and a blind dependence on the one character who steps to the fore of leadership. That would be Big Jim Rennie who happens to be a corrupt local politician and car salesman. Big Jim is driven by a lust for power, a control freak who cloaks himself in pithy religious quotes often explaining to others that what he does, he does for the good of the community. Although Big Jim's character is pitted against Dale "Barbie" Barbara -- who represents the good, reasonable side of humanity -- Big Jim steals the show. Big Jim is hypocritical to the core and it is fascinating to watch how King plays with his main character's self-absorbed self-righteousness.

If any of this sounds familiar, it should. Stephen King wants us to think about how people are easily hoodwinked by politicians and the lure of easy money as well as the creeping corruption we witness at all levels of our lives. By creating the segregated community of Chester's Mill, King has offered us a microcosm of American society complete with people from the various social stratums. Some are honest, hard-working citizens, some are shiftless but harmless denizens of the lower class and some are just downright hypocritical figures who don't give a thought to the welfare of others.

Of course, King displays his own biases while unfolding his story. If he didn't, it would not be much of a story and, realistically, what writer cannot remove bias from a fictional account that by its very nature is charged by emotional responses elicited from the actions and attitudes of his characters? While I do not wholly agree with King's apparent political/social/religious positions, I do not wholly disagree either. There is corruption around us, along with all the accompanying motivating factors of greed, runaway desire, and an underlying sense of entitlement. While some of the attitudes expressed in UNDER THE DOME may offend some readers, others will surely clap their hands in approval. Such is the nature of opinion.

My chief complaint against Stephen King's stories (and this does not include all by any means) is the sometimes inability to give me a satisfying, believable ending. The resolution of UNDER THE DOME works for me, even though there are elements of the fantastic. But hey, what do you expect? It's Stephen King! King ties up all the loose ends, a significant act of writing in itself considering the cast of sixty-three characters he has put together.

I thoroughly enjoyed UNDER THE DOME. The author worked hard on this one and it shows. As I said from the outset, reading King again was like a reunion with an old friend. Thanks for another entertaining read, Mr. King.

Review of REMAINS by Mark W. Tiedemann

Mark Tiedemann's book, REMAINS, is a science fiction mystery set in the early twenty-second century at a time when mankind has established itself on outposts throughout the solar system. The colonies consist of corporate-sponsored settlements on Earth's moon, Mars, several small to large space stations, and a distant foothold on Ganymede. The bulk of the story transpires on the fictional space station, Aea, a space community large enough (twenty kilometers by seven) to house and employ a managed population of roughly a hundred thousand inhabitants.

Tiedemann's protagonist is one Macefield Preston, a high-tech security man whose wife turns up missing, presumably dead, in a catastrophic incident at a construction site on Mars. Mace inserts himself into the investigation amid nagging suspicions of industrial espionage and thereby becomes entangled in corporate intrigue and the politics of competing space communities.

To this humble editor, the story seems to turn on two futuristic themes: the handling of information and the management of closed societies within high-risk environments. Tiedemann approaches both of these themes with thoughtful imagination and meticulous detail. As we so often hear, information is the key to power. How information is passed and secured is central to story development. Since REMAINS' main character is a security expert well-versed in data management, we are taken on an inside tour of how off-planet communities would deal with the realities of shared, and unshared, knowledge. As a key component of this scenario, Tiedemann inserts the concept of cyberlinks, people who can accept and store digital input via artificially enhanced brains. This is certainly not a new concept to the science fiction genre, but Tiedemann's portrayal of a cyberlink's persona (Nemily Dollard, Mace's romantic interest) is accomplished with a humanistic style that adds much depth and sympathy to the character. As the tour progresses, we are reminded that the orderly progression of technological societies is apparently accompanied by restrictions to freedom, as we currently understand the term. This is illustrated via the use of constant public surveillance and by the often heavy-handed tactics of the corporate authorities. Although Tiedemann does not discuss it at length, readers cannot help but consider what it would be like to live in an environment where an individual mistake, or worse, an overt act of espionage, could wipe out an entire community in a matter of minutes.

Tiedemann has a beautiful writing style that showcases his intelligence as well as his knowledge of story-building. His characters are drawn with fine detail; their passions and motives fully exposed for the reader's consideration. Such characterization truly adds depth to Tiedemann's work and is part of why Tiedemann stands out among his contemporaries.

Guam (Chamorro: Guåhan) is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean and is an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. It is one of five U.S. territories with an established civilian government.

Although Guam has a long history of European colonialism, the Chamorros, Guam's indigenous people, first populated the island approximately 4,000 years ago. Discovered by Europeans on March 6, 1521, by Ferdinand Magellan, the first colony was established in 1668 by Spain with the arrival of settlers including Padre San Vitores, a Catholic missionary -- significant because Catholicism remains the dominant religion among Guam's indigenous people. The island was controlled by Spain until 1898, when it was surrendered to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Spanish-American War.

As the largest island in Micronesia and the only US-held island in the region before World War II, Guam was captured by the Japanese on December 8, 1941, hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and was occupied for two and a half years.

During the occupation, the people of Guam suffered terrible atrocities including torture, beheadings, and rape, and were forced to adopt the Japanese culture. The Japanese occupation also imposed a new name, Ō-miya Jima or Great Shrine Island, on the island.

Guam's Japanese occupation lasted for approximately thirty-one months. During this period, the indigenous people of Guam were subjected to forced labor, family separation, incarceration, execution, concentration camps and forced prostitution. Approximately one thousand people died during the occupation, according to Congressional Testimony in 2004. Mariana Island historians estimate that 10% of Guam's population were killed by violence, most by the Imperial Army and Navy.

When the United States' military returned on July 21, 1944, more than 18,000 Japanese were killed in the battle to recapture the island from Japanese military occupation. On the American side, 1,747 US Marines and Army personnel were killed and 6,053 wounded. To this day, Guam remains the only U.S. soil with a sizable population to have been occupied by a foreign military power, since the War of 1812. The United States also captured and occupied the Northern Marianas.

Today, Guam's economy is supported by its principal industry, tourism, which is primarily composed of visitors from Japan. Guam's second-largest source of income is the United States military.

After the war, the Guam Organic Act of 1950, established Guam as an unincorporated organized territory of the United States, provided for the structure of the island's civilian government, and granted the people U.S. citizenship. However, to this day, U.S. citizens residing on Guam are not allowed to vote for president and their congressional representative is a non-voting member.

Although recently criticized, The Drake equation offers a jumping-off point for discussions concerning possibilities for life in the universe. It goes like this:

Out of all the stars in the galaxy (n), only a fraction will have planets (fp). Only some out of those planets will be habitable (H). Out of the habitable planets, a fraction will develop life (fl). From those, another percent will develop intelligent life (fi). Then, out of those, only a fraction will develop technology (ft) sufficient for space travel. (N) becomes the estimate for the number of technological civilizations in the galaxy (N) that are capable of being our little green men. Here is the equation:

N = n × fp × H × fl × fi × ft

There are about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way so use that for (n). We can only guess what fraction of stars have planets, but it can be a qualified guess. If we are optimistic, then we choose a fraction near one, essentially saying all stars have planets. Then we must estimate the number of planets per star that would be habitable. Such planets must be located at a distance from their star that is neither too hot nor too cold (in our current understanding of what constitutes life). In our solar system there are three candidates: Venus, Mars, and the Earth. But we can say some stars would support fewer, or no, habitable planets. So, we can say, on average, only one in 10 stars with planets has one planet that could support life. Plug in the values and we have the following:

N = 100,000,000,000 × 1 × 0.1 × fl × fi × ft

Next, if life can develop, does it develop? Opinions differ on this point. This is where the recent Life on Mars issue has some application. If this development holds up, then life developed on both Mars and the Earth and it becomes much more problematic to say that life is incredibly difficult to get started on any given planet. If you believe life is inevitable, given habitable conditions, then fl =1.

Now, if life forms, does it become intelligent? If we can agree that life has been on Earth for billions of years and modern humans came on the scene only in the last 100,000 years, then take the ratio of 100,000 years of humans to 1 billion years of life. That gives us 1 in 10,000 planets with life that develop intelligence.

Finally, we must consider whether intelligent life inevitably develops technology? Rather than debating the point, let's cut to the chase and assume that intelligence leads to technology (based on our history of development, it's a fair assumption). Ergo, ft = 1. The upgraded equation becomes:

N = 100,000,000,000 × 1 × 0.1 × 1 × 0.0001 × 1

With the plugged-in numbers, N = 1,000,000. That's one million planets with technologies sufficient for space travel.

OK, we slanted the equation by choosing optimistic numbers. If you like, plug in your own numbers. Keep in mind that even if you consider that Earth is the only life-bearing planet in the galaxy, there are still more galaxies in the visible universe than there are stars in our galaxy. So, statistically speaking, if there were only one life bearing planet in each galaxy there would still be trillions of life-bearing planets.

A Review of Time Out by Pat Whitaker

Pat Whitaker's writing form of choice is the novella, a story of length and scope somewhere between a short story and a full length novel. The length of Pat's stories make for a reading experience of two or three hours, perfect for a rainy afternoon or a lazy day at the beach. Among his diverse works is a little piece entitled Time Out, an exploration into the phenomena of alien abductions.

The story is artfully crafted, combining seemingly unrelated incidents into a cohesive whole while exploring possible explanations for a popular urban myth. Whether the reader is sympathetic to the idea of the existence of little green men, or in this case, little grey men, or not, Whitaker gives us something to think about. Indeed, that seems to be the author's goal and, once again, Whitaker hits his mark dead center.

The setting for Time Out is primarily in and around Manchester, England, a locale Whitaker has previously used to good effect in Bad Blood and obviously a place with which New Zealander Whitaker is familiar.

Time Out is not just another science fiction tale drawing conclusions from fantastic premises. It is essentially a mystery and a crime drama with believable characters drawn from Whitaker's fertile imagination. The dialogue is realistic and does much to either gain pathos for the good guys or antipathos for the bad guys. As a North American, I found Whitaker's use of colloquial language charming and easy to grasp. Additionally, the style reveals protagonists to be caring, moral persons, examples of how people should treat one another. With that said, the opposite goes for Whitaker's treatment of his antagonists -- they are depraved criminals who ultimately get what they deserve. Very satisfying for this humble reader.

Lift the Load Lightly

Because I'm feeling thoughtful this morning, I decided to post some rules for getting by that I have carried with me since 1986. They are stuck on my refrigerator door so I am forced to look at them every morning and evening. I am ashamed to admit some of them are just now sinking in.

No one gets out of here alive. Thus, resolve to seek reasonable values for yourself.
Be cheerful & helpful daily because your actions and attitude come back to you.
Avoid angry, abrasive people. They are generally vengeful.
Avoid zealots. They are generally humorless.
Listen more, talk less. No one ever learns anything by talking.
Be cautious of giving advice. Wise men don't need it & fools won't heed it.
Be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving & tolerant of the weak & the wrong. Sometime in life you will have been all of these.
Do not equate money with success. There are many successful money-makers who are miserable failures as human beings. The important thing about success is how a person achieves it.

The John Cusak Movie Experience

I put off watching the movie 2012 because the video ads evoked images that truly frightened me. End of the world stuff. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. So, when I finally drummed up the courage to view it, it was with some trepidation. I knew what to expect. I had read the reviews and watched the trailers. 2012 is an epic disaster story. After I watched it, it occurred to me maybe it was THE epic disaster story. The movie delivered the thrills I expected, bored me where I expected, and wrapped it up with a happy ending. Now, how does one go about making a film that portrays the end of civilization and the deaths of everyone on the planet save a few thousand, and then end the monstrosity by making you feel good? That’s Hollywood for you.

Like many movies of this genre, 2012 has multiple sub-plots, but the main plot concerns a typical, post-modern splintered family, primarily John Cusak's character, the ex-husband, a nice enough guy, a sensitive, caring sort who is an unsuccessful writer supporting himself by driving a limo. At this point, any movie afficionado would recognize we have entered the realm of the John Cusak movie experience. We are going to be sensitive about what happens at the end of the world. We are not going to drop our humanity as everybody else folds into full panic.

I got a little lost in scenes where Cusak's character was reconnecting with his children and ex-wife. We've seen Cusak go through the pantomime before and, although it's become a bit maudlin, he's good at it. All that heartfelt talk in such simple terms even a caveman could understand, the eye contact, it's like watching the same scene over and over again. So I didn't feel bad about going to the kitchen for a snack.

The thing that made me a little uncomfortable was that the new husband was along for the ride throughout the greater part of the film and he was always watching as Cusak mended fences with his estranged family, at least until the surrogate husband is conveniently written out of the script by being crushed to death by oversized mechanical gears within a gigantic ark. Yes, I said ark, as in Noah and the flood. Days later, we see Cusak with his arms around ex-wife, who looks at him and asks, "Where have you been all my life?" Whoa there you two, you didn't make it the first time around, remember? Maybe the subliminal message is that the girl always gets the survivor.

So, the family angle was a little weak. Who cares? The special effects were great and, even though I knew Cusack and his little family would somehow endure, I was on the edge of my seat. Like I said, that end of the world stuff really frightens me.

Global Warming

After suffering through the coldest Texas winter I can recall, I feel prompted to comment about global warming or at least, my perceived lack of global warming. For the record, this winter season is setting records for low temperatures and snowfall not just in Texas but across the North American continent. My apartment is cold, my heating bill is high, and I've been sick with winter-type illnesses for the past month. The climate change pundits haven't issued any statements lately except to say maybe they were wrong. Maybe? I don't need a PhD in meteorology to tell which way the wind is blowing.

Now, why have we been told otherwise? Are there plans afoot to create yet another worldwide emergency and to subsequently re-structure our lives for the good of the planet?

Mmm-maybe.

Well, the powers that be must be a little embarrassed about all the cold. It was supposed to be hot. The oceans were supposed to rise. Glaciers were supposed to melt. We were told these things were already happening. But they can't happen and I'll tell you why: because it's too cold, that's why.

Could it be we've been lied to? I don't know. Let me check the temperature one more time...

New Zealand author Pat Whitaker creates a spellbinding science fiction story in Returning, delivering an alternative historical narrative based on thought-provoking scenarios. With an intriguing premise, Whitaker takes us from the tundra of Siberia to war torn Europe in a pursuit of rocket technology and Nazi political manipulations. The central character is Arthys, an intelligent alien parasite capable of attaching to any biological lifeform. Arthys is from an advanced civilization and has been banished to Earth for unspecified crimes. The impetus for the story arises in Arthys’ efforts to make his way back to his home-world.

Returning gives Whitaker the opportunity to explore several topics – animal consciousness, the depravity of war, human morality and motivation, and not least, the power of human love to lend meaning to life. The reader is treated to private discussions between the leaders of the Nazi hierarchy as Arthys travels from one host to another. Whitaker handles the transitions gracefully with a thorough knowledge of all the players. Indeed, so thorough was the historical accuracy, I found myself thumbing through Bullock’s Hitler: A Study in Tyranny to check the facts. Included in Returning is a fairly detailed exposition of the Nazi rocket program at Peenemunde that is also historically accurate.

The science fiction of Returning does not end with the parasite Arthys and his impact on history, but additionally we are treated to a clear and fascinating look at interstellar travel by an alien civilization thousands of years in advance of our own. As usual, Whitaker is scientifically up-to-date in his speculations.

Returning is a thoughtful read with enough intrigue to satisfy any reader. Whitaker’s prose style is straightforward and accessible, a great relief from some current authors whose works might leave you pondering as to the intent of their stories. Whether one is a connoisseur of science fiction or simply a casual reader, Returning is a must-read.

Be Careful What You Say

As a young man, I boldly ran my mouth with my opinions and my desires, many times getting myself into problems that could have been avoided if I had just remained silent. As I grew older, opinions and desires changed. I found I was not as sure of things as I had been. The more knowledge I gained the less certain I was of the surety of my place in the universe. I was admonished as a young man by parents and reminded by my mother to be careful of what I said, that once it was out of my mouth I could never retrieve it, never correct it. Of course, I tried correcting my errors through apology, through argument, through pleading, but none of that really worked. Once it’s out there you can’t reel it back in.

The same goes for negative thoughts that are voiced. Once the words are spoken, the negative influence remains out in the world. I would even go so far as to say, negative thoughts that precede verbalization influence the thinker and taint the actualization of positive results.

Somewhere in Hemingway’s writings, he has one of his character’s reply to another character’s negative comment by saying, “Don’t put your mouth on it.” It’s a caution against voicing negative thoughts, against sending out fears into the outside world where the world can hear you and then respond by giving you exactly that which you are trying to avoid.

Words are powerful things. They are more than indicators of our thought processes. They are influencers of unfolding reality. So, be careful what you say.

Procrastination Guidelines for Writers

Anyone who has ever set out to write something of merit understands that distractions are the bane of writing. To that end, a writer must understand the pitfalls of starting a project. To avoid the quicksand of a wandering mind, the following rules have been formulated. They have been written in order but feel free to experiment.

1. Get comfortable before beginning your project. Get whatever you need that will help you sit for hours so you won’t have an excuse to get up and search for whatever it is. Food, drinks, candy, coffee, cigarettes, whatever.
2. Play a computer game to get the feel of the computer.
3. When using a word processor, spend time at the beginning of your project learning about style sheets. This will occupy you for hours and most likely you still won’t understand everything you need to know.
4. Buy a manual for the word processor and wait for it to arrive before writing. You need to understand style sheets.
5. Research for project. Surf the internet and/or read a book.
6. Create style sheets, decide on which font to use and size (Times, 12 pt. is suggested.), double space lines, indent paragraphs, margin sizes, header and footer and enter info into style sheets. Feel good about your progress.
7. Take a break.
8. Remember at least one story idea and write it down before actually working on your project.
9. You may need music or radio in the background. Experiment with different music genres and radio talk shows. You’ll think you work better, and that’s what it’s all about.
10. Look for your outline. If you can’t find it or don’t have one, stare at the blinking cursor on your monitor.

Do not forget you have a telephone nearby. Feel free to call friends and family, not necessarily to talk about your project, but to loosen up the mind for writing. It is not recommended to watch television while trying to write but if something good is on, go ahead and tune in. You may see something you can write into your story. If it helps, call it research.

Fruitful procrastination is, of course, an art form. If you find yourself bored during procrastination, rest assured you’re doing it wrong. Meaningful procrastination takes time. Practice your craft. When you can devout a full day to preparing to write, you’re almost ready.

Good Writing

Good writing doesn’t always sell, but it certainly prevails over bad writing. So then, what is the difference between good and bad writing? That’s easy to answer. Good writing delivers a message clearly and succinctly, and sometimes even in a thought-provoking, meaningful manner. Bad writing muddies the waters of comprehension and delivers a message that cannot be readily grasped.

There are rules for writing that will allow you to have a command over language. Using the rules correctly, you will have the power of written persuasion at your fingertips. You will be able to summon forth an ability to communicate like none other. You will be able to analyze problems, find solutions, win arguments, and gain recognition. Just follow the rules. We who ply the trade of writing call these rules grammar. Good grammar is following the rules. Bad grammar is not following the rules. Remember, if your reader can’t understand what you’re trying to say, you have failed.

Are there shortcuts to good grammar? Sure, it’s called reading. All successful writers have a superior sense of good grammar and I guarantee none of them developed their craft by watching television. They read before ever attempting a paragraph. They read everything, especially those subjects that interest them.

People often come to me with an idea for a story. Additionally, it’s always an undeveloped idea. Then they suggest I “flesh it out” and “put it into words”. Magnanimously, they add, “When it makes a million, you can split the proceeds with me.” My reply is that a story idea is nothing without someone to write it. It’s their idea they insist. Try copyrighting an idea I suggest.

Good writing is not only worthwhile, it is worth dollars and worthy of reward. Good writing is recognizable as such, as is bad writing. Good writers practice their vocation. Bad writers posture, speculate, and probably watch too much television.

Am I the Only One Concerned?

Man, I've got a short list of friends but I have to say none seem terribly concerned about the state of the economy. When I tell them it appears things are going to get much, much worse, they pooh-pooh and tell me how negative I am. "You're giving off bad vibes," they say. Well, maybe I am, but it's the way I see it. Employment figures are awful, lots of folks saying bad stuff about the government, no money to go around, and no end in sight. Why should I believe otherwise? And lots of end-of-the-world stuff at the movies too. Anybody else notice? Hey, how about that trailer for 2012? Surfin' over the Himalayas. The Beach Boys would be proud.

Watched Surveillance last night. Grisly, but still two thumbs up. It's from the same folks who brought us The Last House On The Left (David and Jessica Lynch).
Now waiting for Avatar (Dec 18) which they say is going to change they way we watch media altogether. But what the heck, I just want to see a good sci-fi story.

Healthcare

Hey, I'm for universal healthcare. It's a great idea to alleviate suffering, help the poor and rich alike, and teach people how to live happier, healthier lives. With that said, I do not want to see a corrupt political system administer such a system especially during a worldwide economic depression. Why do we have to do it now? Just another example of the power elite using a crisis to further their agenda. The politics of crowd-control. Everybody line up and take a number. It's a power grab that will severely limit our freedom with far-reaching consequences.

Read a news article predicting the next collapse at the end of August. More likely in October.
Another news item saying the latest unemployment figures were wrong and numbers are still rising. I wish they'd get it right.
District-9 comes out tomorrow. Kind of excited about that. Hope to catch a matinee.
Haven't had a TV for three years and not really missing it except for MMA. Of course, I rent more movies now. Speaking of which, saw Frost/Nixon last weekend and thought it was very good no matter which side of the aisle you're from.
By 2011, most Americans will be upside-down in their houses. That is, their mortgages will greatly exceed the value of their houses. Still, people gotta live somewhere.
I wonder who the most evil person in our government is?
If we discovered another habitable planet, would you endorse an exploratory mission?
I think kids have way too much freedom these days. Ah, but what you gonna do with only one parent around?

It won't have quite the same effect, but it sure will be easier for me. I'm going to assume you webophiles know how to post a response to blog. If not, it's fairly self-evident.

OK, let the posting begin.

Surviving Economic Collapse

Step1 Read. Educate yourself before hand if possible. Read everything you can on how to survive a total economic collapse. Start with "Financial Reckoning Day: Surviving the Soft Depression of the 21st Century" and "Empire of Debt: The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis", both by William Bonner, for a historical perspective and very well-written analysis of the current situation. Also read "The Great Bust Ahead: The Greatest Depression in American History" by Daniel A. Arnold. (See the Resources section, below.)

Step2 Plan. Make a plan for how to survive a total economic collapse. List your debts and assets. How quickly can you pay down your debt, while still purchasing necessary supplies? Your goals should include no debt and the procurement and storage of valuable assets. Your preparation timetable should be as short as possible.

Step3 Nix debt. Pay off debt and avoid new debt by paying with cash instead of credit cards. Concentrate on paying off high-interest debt, loans with adjustable rates and unsecured debts first. Sell expensive vehicles that have loans to pay off what you owe, and buy cheaper replacements using cash. In order to survive a total economic collapse, you need to have assets, not liabilities. (Note: storing food and resources are higher priority than paying down debt for families of modest means.)
Step4 Buy Silver. Change liquid savings into silver and gold. If the dollar collapses, having precious metals will preserve your money and it can be used as currency or exchanged for a currency with value, such as Swiss francs. As the dollar continues to lose value, silver dollars preserve their value or go up in value, thus protecting your assets in the event of a economic recession, allowing you to financially survive a recession or depression.

Step5 Invest wisely. Re-evaluate your stocks and mutual funds. In order to financially survive a total economic collapse, your investments must be secure. Consider putting some of your stocks into gold (GLD) or opening a precious metals IRA. Research stocks that will survive a total economic collapse through sites like Daily Reckoning Day.

Step6 Store grain. Purchase goods and valuables such as guns for hunting and personal protection, and basic food supplies such as whole grains and legumes, which are easy to store. Invest in water purification bottles and tablets, and keep some bottled water on hand to meet immediate needs in the event of a shortage. All of these will make it more possible to survive a total economic collapse.

Step7 First aid. Prepare a First Aid Kit, sewing kit and other practical necessities of daily life to aid in survival of a total economic collapse. These are good things to have on hand anyway, for regular daily life as well as unforeseen emergencies.

Step8 Build community. Get to know your neighbors and build a community wherever you are. In the event of total economic collapse, life will become very local and survival will depend on working together with others, beginning with families.

Step9 Grow food. Grow some of your own food and raise animals for meat. Chickens and rabbits are small and easy to tend. Chickens provide eggs as well as meat and are excellent sources of protein and fat, both critical for survival. In economic downturns such as a recession or depression, being able to produce food is a important skill to have.

Step10 Barter. Learn how to barter, and stock items to trade. Think about necessities (wool blankets, soap, boots, duct tape, ammunition) as well as luxuries (chocolate, tobacco, alcohol). Useful tools will be more valuable than money if there is a currency collapse. Useful barter items will be helpful to have on hand as you prepare to survive an economic collapse.

The late Heath Ledger got Best Supporting Actor for his Joker portrayal in Batman and the homophobic Sean Penn ironically won Best Actor for his role as Harvey Milk, gay activist. Once again, the academy snubbed Rob Zombie for Best Director.

Ongoing news indicates the greatest shift of wealth in world history is proceeding nicely. The common man is in a downhill slide that will last for years to come. Poverty and deprivation will likely reach new lows. The results? More dependence on government, less freedom, less choice.

Ah, but we had a grand Super Bowl, eh? The Steelers and the Cards were locked in a titanic display of might that afforded us a distraction from our woes for a few hours. In between the action scenes we were bombarded by displays of materiality and ads for new movies. In all, it was a thrilling evening on the couch.

The Dow is still playing with the 8000 point watershed.
